Installation at Berkeley Bart

This is my final site for library. My hope is that these libraries will remain in their original site, but I understand that they could be confiscated. I hope that this project will bless and build our community. I will be checking on each library periodically, and do my best to restock the books.

Installation at 12th street Bart

I was fortunate to have my friend Akasha drive Jasmine's car to help me transport the library structure and materials ( thank you so much!). The structure did not fit in the car, therefore we had to secure it above using yarn and scarfs, it was interesting. All went well, and I was glad to see people immediately engaging with the project.

First installation at MacArthur Bart

Today I restocked and updated the Rockridge Bart Library, and installed a library at MacArthur Bart. Some of the successes I had was being able to transport the library structure on Public Transportation. I was worried that Bart especially would not allow me to take a huge structure on the Bart, but everything went smoothly as far as navigating the materials there. At the Rockridge Bart I was happy to see several people engaging in the library and also share with me some positive feedback, along with their experience with the library. Today overall was a great test run to prepare me for the installation of the two other libraries. One of the disadvantages was forgetting the small posters with the name of the library on them, so I will be revisiting all the libraries to attach those. Im looking forward to installing the rest next week.

Book Donations

I am currently in the process of collecting books for my project. The ReUse Depot has been a great resource for me, and I've obtained numerous books from there thus far. I'm hoping to find unique ways to collaborate with the Oakland community through asking for book donations from local businesses, or advertising the library to the community surrounding the project. If you are interested in donating books, or are aware of resources that could benefit this project please feel free to comment or let me know.

Envisioning My Final Project for Contemporary Arts and Ideas Class

Art 011: Final Project
4/16/13
I am interested in pursuing an extended version of my situational library. Using all the knowledge that I’ve developed, and the feedback I received concluding the previous situational library project, I want to create multiple libraries. I’m thinking of maybe creating 3 situational libraries total, and placing them in the community as a permanent installation just like the first one. Each one will have a variety of books, not focused on one topic; I want to provide different genres to cater to different types of audiences. Over time as I observed my last project located at the Rockridge Bart, I noticed that people would leave books that were not related to the subject I had intended it to be for. I then realized that the subject I chose for the library only allowed a limited amount of people to engage with it.  I would love to get access to children’s books and adult books. I will be seeking support from the Re-Use Depot, Mills College Library, and hopefully reach out to public libraries to see if they would be interested in collaborating.
The location that I will most likely be working in is the ceramic studio, because I would need to have access to power tools. The three places that I am leaving my library at are different Bart stations. These sites would be the ones nearest to Mills, such as MacArthur Bart, Berkeley Bart, and Lake Merit Bart.  My hope is that my project would be beneficial for both me and the community.

The First Soul Food Library In Effect

I few days later I checked up on the Library, and was surprised to see that it was still standing. My greatest fear was that it would be taken down and discarded by employees of the city. But I was happy to see that people actually took some books, and eventually they started donating books to the library also.

Constructing the First Situational Library

The Topic of my First Situational Library

faith or spiritual development

The purpose of the library was to provide a tangible resource for those seeking to develop or learn about faith and spirituality. I will incorporate books related to different faith backgrounds and spirituality. I wanted it to be installed in a public area with high traffic, and that was convenient for the audience to stop and engage in the library, therefore I chose the Rockridge Bart.

The Origins of the Library Project

The Situational Library Project came from my Contemporary Arts and Ideas class taught by Amy Franceschini at Mills College. This class is "concept-driven." This class challenged me to become a fearless creator "open to a multitude of possible modes of creation; walking, urban interventions, cooking, temporary sculpture and animation." We explored different types of art creations, and I gravitated towards the Situational Library Project the most. For this project we were required to create a library to be installed in a public area for a certain amount of time. The guidelines were broad, and not too specific, which allowed room for creativity and experimentation.
